What the color of your urine can tell you about your health

Most of us don’t pay much attention to the color of our urine unless there is something unusual. Yet, this everyday detail can provide valuable clues about your fluid balance, diet, medication, and in some cases, your overall health.

Although occasional changes in the color of your urine are often harmless, persistent or drastic changes should not be ignored. Understanding the meaning of different colors can help you determine when a simple lifestyle adjustment is sufficient and when it is time to consult a healthcare provider.

Why does urine change color?

Urine owes its yellow color to a natural pigment called  urochrome  , which is produced when the body breaks down old red blood cells.

The amount of water in your urine determines how light or dark that yellow color is. Well-hydrated people usually have lighter urine, while dehydration causes urine to become darker and more concentrated.

Other factors that can influence the color of urine are:

  • Food
  • Vitamins and supplements
  • Prescription medicines
  • Certain medical conditions

Clear or almost transparent urine

Crystal-clear urine often means that you drink a lot of water.

Although adequate hydration is essential, consistently producing completely clear urine may indicate that you are consuming more fluids than your body needs. In most cases, this is not harmful. However, if it is accompanied by extreme thirst or frequent urination, it is advisable to discuss this with your doctor.

Light yellow: the healthy standard

Light yellow urine is generally considered a sign of good fluid balance and normal kidney function.

This color usually indicates that your body is receiving sufficient fluids without becoming overhydrated. Many healthcare providers consider light yellow urine to be an ideal target.

Dark yellow or amber

Dark yellow or amber-colored urine often indicates mild dehydration.
